Update on John

Sunday, October 22nd, 2006

From Cindy:

I received an update on John from Marilyn (SIL)

“John’s health continues to decline. Although the sugar is currently under control, it has done so much damage to the rest of him. He has a permanent catheter, cataracts with macular degeneration and is barely mobile. Gratefully, he has daily home health now. He has struggled so much with depression that he recently began seeing a therapist. His wife Shirley is always with him and thinks the counseling is proving to be a positive thing for him. He still keeps the share-a-cards displayed and she tells me he loves bragging to new visitors about where they came from. Shirley has asked me to pass along her sincerest thanks for all you’ve done for John. Mine too! ”

If you could say a few extra prayers for John
Hugs,Cindy

Holiday Card Project

Sunday, October 22nd, 2006

Since we have many new members with us this year, let me give them a heads up on the annual Holiday Card Project!

Each year, we compile a list of our active features (those who have sent us an update in the last 6 mths) and we have our annual FUN project!! :) The holidays can be very depressing who those who are ill or shut-in. They watch all around them as everyone shops, decorates, bakes and basically enjoy the holidays, all the while many cannot leave their homes or are ill from their treatments! YOU can help make a difference! Just imagine the delight when a feature receives a large envelope filled with greeting cards from all over the U.S. and Canada wishing them well and sending them caring thoughts!

We ask that members send cards to our active features. Those cards can be store bought or handmade, however you like! You can send to one feature or all features. Basically, all the cards get sent to the ShareaCard post office box. Cindy collects them for a period of about 6 weeks. This year’s deadline will be Monday December 4th. After the mailing deadline, Cindy and I get together and oogle over all the cards while counting, sorting and packaging up all the cards. We then venture off to the post office with a carload full of envelopes and get them all mailed out :)

Last year we collected over 746 cards.  Our goal this year will be an all time high of 900 cards!! I know we can do this! I’ve already had several people inquire into doing the Holiday Card Project as a service project….what a wonderful idea! I will be working on a flyer for those who wish to print it and distribute it at their church group or local school. Even girl scout or cub scout troops can get involved!

More information will be coming as soon as we finish gathering the information and collecting updates :)

If you have any suggestions/comments/questions, you may contact any of the moderators or email me directly.

We are all looking so forward to making 2006 the best year yet!

Connie received this feedback on the followup letter for Kathy:

Thank you all so very much. I look forward to the cards I received. I’m still in my struggle with cancer. I just had surgery #2.

I have wanted to write & thank you all. I’m still in lots of pain & a long road ahead of me. But I so look forward to the mail to see where the next card was coming from, what state, all the love & concern from all states is amazing to me.

I hope to be a person that can send cards to others one day. Thank you

Kathy

I’m moved to tears! This will reaffirm that we ARE making a difference!

****************************************

This came from Janet’s aunt, Sandy

Just got the news today that they doctors are rescheduling her surgery for the 25th.  They want to be certain that her blood counts are high enough and she has no mouth ulcers.  She’s still in the hospital; I’m home for my evening two hours -drop-off-laundry-pick-up-mail run.

At the present, she is doing amazingly well, all things considered.  Much of that can be attributed to you and all the folks you have rallied for her.  I know that some people cannot imagine how a card, or a hat, or a charm can make such a tremendous difference in her spirits – but it does.  And not just a little.A LOT.  Especially after the long stretches, we both feel so isolated and detached that it’s difficult to explain.  It almost feels like we’re in a different world from everyone else and we’re kind of watching through a picture window.
The packages full of cards and gifts from you and all your friends help bring her – and me  – back to the real world, and more importantly, to the understanding that the real world is full of people who care and are thoughtful and compassionate enough to take the time to send messages to a young girl they don’t even know.  It is amazing.

I was thinking about the story about the little boy and the starfish on the beach on the ride home from the hospital.  I know you’ve probably seen it but if not, it’s about a boy who is picking up starfish that have washed up on the shore and throwing them back into the ocean.  A man sees the boy and says to him, “son, why are you wasting your time trying to save those starfish?  There’s so many, you’ll never be able to make a difference.”  As the boy picked up another starfish and threw it into the ocean he calmly stated, “It made a difference to that one.”

I know the story is more eloquently stated elsewhere, but I hope you know, and everyone who has sent Janet a card, letter, or anything else, knows that you make a difference.  And considering how much of the fight against cancer is mental, a very big difference.

Please share this with everyone who has joined in to support her.

Much love and gratitude -

Julie (Janet’s mom)

October 2006- Meet Jodi

Monday, October 16th, 2006

Our Volunteer of the Month and very first person to be honored is Jodi D.  Jodi was born and raised in Ohio and still lives there with husband, Derek and three young children; Drake (9), Mason (7) and Rileigh (5).  They live in a farmhouse that was built by her grandfather!  Joining them in the farmhouse is an assortment of pigs, cows, goats, chickens and rabbits.  The newest member of the family is a Pekingese puppy!  I would say Jodi has her hands full.

She loves daffodils and they make her happy.  To Jodi they represent the season of spring and that it is time for everything to come alive again.  What a beautiful thought.

If she would do anything at all in her spare time, she would sit at the beach and enjoy watching the waves crash on the shore while feeling the warmth of the sun and enjoying the sounds and the smells of the sea.  Since a trip to the ocean is somewhat of a novelty living in Ohio, her spare time is more realistically spent playing with her children.  They all love to play baseball.

Jodi is an avid mystery reader and loves nothing better then to curl up in her jammies and read to her heart’s content on a rainy day.  She keeps a rather large stash gently stacked under her bed!

Jodi is an avid rubber stamper and has been using her talents to make cards for the past 15 years!!  She has amassed quite a collection over the years and that is what brought her to Shareacard.  She was looking for a way to use the special cards that she has made.  How lucky we all are that she found us on the internet and has been treating our features with her very special handmade cards for the past 10 months.

Thank you, Jodi, for sharing a little of yourself with all of us and for showing such dedication to those in need.  Congratulations!

We hope that you enjoy your ShareaCard mug!

Congratulations!
